A self drive Tour of Denmark, visiting Copenhagen, Frederiksborg Castle, Gilleleje, where on 23 Oct. 1943, during World War II, the Danish Jews were saved from capture, by fishermen bringing them to safety in Sweden.

Itinerary

Day 1
Clients check into the 174-room Copenhagen Strand Hotel in Copenhagen. We recommend travelers take a city tour to familiarize themselves with the city. The first evening, we suggest a visit Tivoli Gardens, renowned as the world's oldest amusement park at 155 years old, for an evening meal at Grøften restaurant within the park.  Tivoli is open from mid April to mid September, again Late November to Christmas for the Christmas Market.

Day 2 
After full breakfast, pick up a rental car and take a 45-minute drive across the bridge to Malmö to wander through the town's shopping area and enjoy lunch at anyone of the many small cafes along the way. In the afternoon, you can sightsee on your own in Copenhagen before dinner at Cap Horn, which is known for its traditional Danish dishes.

Day 3
After full breakfast,  visit to Frederiksborg Castle near Copenhagen continuing on to Gilleleje's harbor where you may have lunch at Karen and Marie's Restaurant. Visit the Gilleleje church to see where Danish Jews were hidden before escaping by ship to Sweden, saving them from capture by the occupying German forces in 1943. 
In the afternoon embark on the 4-hour drive to Ribe, where you check into the 48-room, 16th century Dagmar Hotel, which is situated across the street from the Ribe Cathedral dating back to 1125A.D. Dine that evening at the hotel's highly acclaimed restaurant.

Day 4
After breakfast you can stroll through Ribe and visit the Cathedral, which dates back to 1125 AD, before the 2-3 hour (30 minutes direct without sightseeing along the way) drive to the hamlet of Schackenborg.  
Along the way, you can stop at Rømø, an island off the North Sea Coast south of Esbjerg.  They continue south to Tønder and walk though the old town before continuing west to Møgeltønder and Schackenborg. Have dinner and an overnight at the Schakenborg Castle Inn.

Day 5
After breakfast explore the town before continuing east to Jutland and Als. Catch a ferry to Bøjden that transports you to the Island of Fyn, where you'll overnight and dine at the Classic Hvedholm Castle in Fåborg.

Day 6
After breakfast enjoy the morning at the grounds.  Drive to Egeskov Castle for an afternoon tour and perhaps enjoy lunch there.  Drive south again to Falsled Kro (Inn) for an exquisite evening meal.  The Late President Nixon held a G7 summit meeting there many years ago, the place is famous for its culinary experiences.  Overnight at Hvedholm Castle.
Day 7
After early breakfast start driving to Odense, to visit the Museum and home of Hans Christian Andersen, the world famous author of children's stories such as The Ugly Duckling, The Littel Mermaid and many more.  At noon head back to Copenhagen Airport for your trip back home.

Itinerary

Day 1: Copenhagen - Odense - Kolding
Meet your tour escort in front of the classic Palace Hotel for a 9 a.m. departure. You will drive across the impressive bridge to the island of Funen, Denmark's fruit haven. After arriving in Odense, join the guided visit of Hans Christian Andersen's house, with free time for lunch on your own. The remainder of the day includes tours of fairy-tale castles that dreams are made of! First a visit to Egeskov Castle, the romantic Renaissance castle preserved on its own island; continuing on to Troense, to see Valdemar Castle, the romantic setting of a classic love story and film of Elvira Madigan's romance with Colonel Sparre. Then, after meandering through numerous manors and estate houses, you drive over the bridge to the mainland peninsula of Jutland and to the city of Koldingfjord.

Day 2: Kolding - Jelling - Silkeborg - Århus
After a decadent breakfast, you explore Jelling, home of the many famous burial grounds and stones displaying Runic inscriptions. Continue on to the picturesque city of Silkeborg, in the heart of the Danish Lake District, Jutland. Hold on as you ascend Denmark's highest hill, Himmelbjereget, 483 feet high, to enjoy a traditional lunch of "Smørrebrød." In the afternoon, continue on to Århus, the second largest city in Denmark, with a guided visit to "Den Gamle By." This is an open-air museum, with a collection of 61 town houses on site. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon with a casual stroll along the cobblestoned streets.

Day 3: Århus - Copenhagen

Today's journey begins with a coach excursion along the eastern coast of Jutland to Djursland to the quaint coastal town of Ebeltoft. You will have some free time to admire the tiniest city hall you have ever encountered before venturing over to the island of Sealand. The two-hour cruise across the Kattegat Sea arrives in Kalundborg with a short stop at Vor Frue Kirke, the Church of Our Lady, built in 1170. Before returning to Copenhagen, visit Roskilde, Sealand's second largest city, to see the tombs of 38 Danish kings. Upon arriving in Copenhagen, your coach will drop you at your hotel.

Day 1, Sunday
Depart USA for Copenhagen

Day 2, Monday
Arrival Copenhagen on and transfer to the domestic terminal for flight to Aalborg. Transfer to the Radisson Limfjord Hotel. Welcome dinner in Jomfru Anegade, Aalborgs famous restaurant row.(D)

Day 3, Tuesday
After breakfast (we are trying to get an invitation to be inducted into the CHR.IV Guild - and if successful -) we will walk to Duus Wine Cellar at 0900am. We MUST be seated 15 minutes prior to the induction ceremony's beginning! You will be inducted in the world famous Chr. IV Guild. After the ceremony we may be invited to the Town Hall, and meet the Mayor. Lunch and the afternoon is on your own to explore. The Budolfi Cathedral is very nice and right next door to the Mayors office. The ones wishing to visit the Archives may do so on their own.(B)

Day 4, Wednesday 
After breakfast we take a morning city tour. Have a lunch on your own in the city before we go to Royal Copenhagen for a tour of the porcelain factory. Return to the city for a farewell dinner in Tivoli Gardens. Overnight at Absalon Hotel. (B/D)

Day 5, Thursday
After breakfast we drive to Noerre Snede to visit the Kjeldsens's Cookie factory. We will stop for lunch en-route at a small Danish inn. After lunch we will continue to Legoland for a visit at the Legoland park. This visit will take about an hour and 45 minutes. The group will continue to Vejle Centre Hotel wor the overnight. Dinner on your own, and it is possible to walk into downtown Vejle, about a 10 minute walk, to dine at a local restaurant. (B/L)

Day 6, Friday
After breakfast we continue on to Ribe. Check into the hotel Dagmar for the overnight. You can have a stroll on your own exploring this 1000 year old village. Dinner will be at a local restaurant across the street or in the hotel. After dinner at 8:00pm we will take a walking tour with the "Night Watchman" who will guide us through the old town of Ribe. Day 7, Saturday 
After breakfast we will drive over to Romoe a small island off the west coast in the North Sea. This island is a quaint little vacation community with very wide white sandy beaches. From there we continue to Schackenborg Manor House, the residence of Prince Joachim and Princess Alexandra. There we can stop for lunch at the local Inn. After lunch we will continue to Soenderborg. We over night at Hotel Scandic in Soenderborg. (B/L)
Day 8, Sunday 
After breakfast we drive from Soenderborg over Als a small peninsula, where we catch a ferry from Fynshav to Boejden. We visit Egeskov Castle in the afternoon. We will see the park, the Maze, the Museums, playground and Castle. We continue to Odense and check-in at the Hans Christian Andersen Radisson SAS Hotel. We will have a diner at Den Gamle Kro in Odense, a short walk from the hotel. This hotel has a Casino if anyone is interested in charming lady luck. (B/D)
Day 9, Monday 
After breakfast the morning is free to explore Hans Christian Andersen's home and Museum. We will depart about 11:00am for Roskilde. When we get there we can enjoy a snack or a Danish hot dog or whatever you desire, on your own, before we visit The Cathedral, where the Royal Family for generations have been placed in their final resting place. After the Cathedral we will visit the Viking Ship Museum nearby, seeing how the Vikings over 1000 years ago managed their seafaring ways. Afternoon we depart for Elsinore and check into the Marienlyst Hotel. It is possible to take a short boat ride from Elsinore Harbour over to Sweden and stroll around in Helsingborg. It is quite nice. You may wish to take dinner on board the Ferry on your own. The hotel also has a casino if anyone is interested. (B)

Day 10, Tuesday 
After breakfast you can stroll the very nice small walking street in Elsinore, before we go to Kronborg Castle (Hamlet's Castle) for a 1 ½ hour tour. We will see a magnificent Castle overlooking the Oeresund Strait. After the tour we continue to Gilleleje Harbor visiting with the Mayor at his office (if he is home). We will go down to the Church at Gilleleje showing how the Danish Jews were hidden before shipping them across to Sweden, saving them from capture by the occupying German Forces (23 Oct 1943). See the boat that belonged to the old Fisherman Niels Sorensen, one of the brave fishermen who carried out the daring crossing amidst German patrol boats. Lunch is on your own in the quaint little fishing harbor, where you can enjoy the fresh catch of the day. After leaving the harbor we will make a brief stop at the library and see the memorial statue offered the village by the President of Israel. From there we will continue into Copenhagen.

If time permits we can make a brief stop at Frederiksborg Castle, today a National Museum. We will check into the Absalon Hotel in the heart of Copenhagen, just three blocks from Tivoli Garden. Dinner is on your own. (B)

Day 11, Wednesday 
After breakfast the bus departs for Frederikshavn and Skagen. We will visit the museum at Skagen, The Sand Covered Church and have lunch at Harbor on your own. Early afternoon continuing to Loekken, where we will enjoy an afternoon cup of coffee and a Danish pastry. Late afternoon we return to the hotel in Aalborg. Dinner is on your own. (B)
Day 12, Thursday 
After Breakfast the morning and mid day is on your own for last minute shopping. The Bus will pick us up at about 1:00pm for the transfer to the airport. The SAS flight leaves for Chicago at 3:30pm. Arrival at O'Hare is at 5:40pm
